Happy Boxing Day . . .

After our morning coffee, I headed out to a client’s home office to set up the new computer that I got for her before Christmas. But I quickly ran into a problem when I tried to hook up her older model Sony LCD monitor.

The monitor only has a VGA input and the computer didn’t have one. Only HDMI and DVI. Or rather, it had both a VGA and HDMI output on the motherboard, but there were stickers on both ports saying “This Port Has Been Disabled”.

Instead of the motherboard ports, there was a separate video card with an HDMI and a DVI port. And of course, no VGA ports.

So it was off to Fry’s Electronics to pick up a new monitor so I could get back to work. I also picked up an HDMI cable since most monitors don’t include HDMI cables, though it did include a VGA cable. Lot of good that did me.

Then it was back to the client’s, and back to work. I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning off all the junk that comes on new machines, and then started installing support programs like AVG, ZoneAlarm, SuperAntiSpyware, etc.

Finally, a little after 4pm, I wrapped up for the day and headed back to the rig, where I picked up Jan and we headed back out to have dinner at the Chili’s up in Kemah.

Then it was off to Wal-Mart for some groceries before heading back to the rig for the night.

Later I spent some time on the phone with my friend Nick Russell trying to fix his rig’s heat pump via remote control.

You’d think if he wanted it fixed for free, he’d at least bring it to me.

But, nooooo!

  1. Greg,I think I sent you a email a while ago about my hard drive that I have and all of my pictures had been deleted. Do you know if it is possible to retrieve them. Thanks for any info. Jim Swan

  2. You must have spent some time in Canada , Americans are not that familiar with Boxing Day!

Rose( a Canadian who knows boxing day all too well!)

  3. Maybe you should be in Florida with Nick so he wouldn’t be all abandoned.. But then I saw a nice picture on another blog of several couples at a restaurant including Nick and Terry so perhaps they aren’t abandoned after all..

I’m surprised that you don’t purchase parts and a case to build clean computers from scratch.. That can be quicker than cleaning up all the bloatware they load on machines now days!! And you get exactly the ports you need….. I’ve been using Linux Mint, because its free, but that might no fly with some of your clients…….

  4. Rose,

It’s amazing what you learn on the Internet.

  5. Rod,

I built up my machines for years, but after Fry’s came to town, it just didn’t pay anymore.

By the time I buy the parts, and an OS, and then put it all together, as opposed to opening the box and turning it on, as well as a 1 yr warranty, it’s cheaper and less time consuming.

And since most of my clients are small businesses, they only want Windows.

  6. Jim,

Can you give me some more information?

Is the HD still in use?

    How were the photos deleted?

    Let me know.

  7. OK, so I downloaded Zone Alarm and SuperAntiSpyware. Any other programs you would like to suggest we all should have on our computers? Inquiry minds want to know.

  8. Bobbie,

What are you using for Virus Protection?

  9. I’m using the free version of Avast, I also use Malwaerbytes and Glary Utilities.

  10. Chappy,

I use the free version of AVG.

I also SuperAntiSpyware as well as Malwarebytes. They work fine together.

I also used CCleaner along with Glary.
